How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring in New Zealand
Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most meaningful purchases you will ever make. Whether you have been thinking about it for months or the idea has just started to take shape, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about finding the right ring here in New Zealand.
Start With Your Partner's Style
Before you look at a single diamond, spend some time thinking about the person who will wear this ring every day. Their personal style is the best starting point you have. Do they tend to wear simple, understated jewellery, or do they gravitate towards bolder, more detailed pieces? Are they drawn to classic designs, or do they prefer something modern and unexpected?
Pay attention to the jewellery they already wear. The colour of their favourite pieces can tell you whether they lean towards yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum. The size and scale of their everyday accessories can guide you towards a delicate solitaire or a more substantial halo setting.
If you are not sure, ask their close friends or family. Many partners will have dropped hints without you realising. Some couples choose to shop together, which takes the guesswork out entirely. There is no wrong approach here. The goal is a ring that feels right for them.
Understanding Diamond Shapes
The shape of the centre diamond has the single biggest impact on how your engagement ring will look. Each shape has its own character, and knowing the differences will help you narrow your options quickly.
Round Brilliant
The round brilliant is the most popular diamond shape worldwide and here in New Zealand. Its 58 facets are specifically designed to maximise sparkle and light return. Round diamonds work beautifully in almost every setting style, from classic solitaires to halo designs. If your partner values brilliance above all else, a round diamond is a reliable choice.
Oval
Oval diamonds have surged in popularity over the past few years. Their elongated shape creates the illusion of a larger stone and has a flattering effect on the finger. Ovals offer exceptional brilliance, similar to round diamonds, but with a more distinctive silhouette.
Princess Cut
The princess cut is a square or slightly rectangular shape with sharp, clean corners. It is a strong choice for anyone who loves geometric lines and a contemporary feel. Princess cut diamonds tend to look striking in modern settings with clean metalwork.
Emerald Cut
Rather than sparkle, the emerald cut offers a hall-of-mirrors effect with long, elegant flashes of light. Its step-cut facets give it an art deco quality that appeals to those who appreciate vintage glamour and sophistication. Because the open facets show more of the stone, clarity is especially important with this shape.
Cushion Cut
Sometimes described as a pillow shape, the cushion cut combines a square outline with softly rounded corners. It has a romantic, vintage feel and produces beautiful broad flashes of light. Cushion cuts pair wonderfully with halo settings that complement their soft shape.
Pear Shape
The pear shape, also known as a teardrop, is a unique option that combines the brilliance of a round diamond with an elongated point. It creates an elegant, slimming look on the hand and stands out from more common shapes. Pear diamonds are ideal for anyone who wants something a little different without straying too far from traditional styles.
Choosing the Right Ring Setting
The setting is the framework that holds your diamond in place and defines the overall look of the ring. Here are the three most popular engagement ring settings in New Zealand.
Solitaire
A solitaire setting features a single diamond on a plain band. It is the most timeless and enduring engagement ring style, and for good reason. With no additional stones or detailing to compete for attention, all focus falls on the centre diamond. Solitaires work with every diamond shape and suit a wide range of personal styles.
Halo
A halo setting surrounds the centre stone with a ring of smaller diamonds. This creates extra sparkle and makes the centre diamond appear larger than it actually is. Halo rings are a popular choice in New Zealand, particularly for those who love a ring with presence and detail. Double halos add even more impact for those who want maximum brilliance.
Trilogy (Three Stone)
A trilogy ring features three stones, traditionally representing the past, present, and future of your relationship. The centre stone is usually the largest, flanked by two smaller stones. Trilogy rings carry beautiful symbolism and offer a balanced, elegant look that works with many diamond shapes.
Metal Types: Gold, White Gold, Platinum, Rose Gold
The metal you choose for the band affects both the appearance and the long-term care of the ring. Each option has its own qualities and appeal.
- Yellow Gold is the most traditional choice and has a warm, classic tone. It is available in 9ct, 14ct, and 18ct, with higher carats offering a richer colour and greater purity.
- White Gold has a contemporary, silvery appearance and complements cooler skin tones beautifully. It is rhodium-plated for extra brightness and may need re-plating every few years to maintain its finish.
- Platinum is the most durable precious metal used in jewellery. It is naturally white, hypoallergenic, and does not require plating. Platinum is denser and heavier than gold, giving rings a satisfying, substantial feel.
- Rose Gold has a distinctive pinkish hue created by alloying gold with copper. It has become increasingly popular for its warm, romantic quality and pairs especially well with vintage-inspired ring designs.
If your partner already wears jewellery in a particular metal colour, matching that colour is usually a safe bet. Mixed metals are also perfectly acceptable. There are no rules here, only preferences.
Setting Your Budget
One of the first questions most people have is how much to spend. In New Zealand, the average spend on an engagement ring sits somewhere between $6,000 and $8,000, but this is simply an average. There is no right or wrong amount. The best engagement ring is one you can afford comfortably, without stretching your finances in a way that adds stress to what should be an exciting time.
The old guideline of spending two or three months' salary is outdated and was originally created by diamond marketing campaigns. Spend what feels right for your situation. A thoughtfully chosen ring at any price point can be absolutely stunning.
If budget is a priority, there are several smart ways to get more for your money. Choosing a slightly lower carat weight, opting for a diamond shape that retains more rough stone (like an oval or cushion), or selecting a halo setting that makes the centre stone look larger can all help.
Lab-grown diamonds are another option worth considering. They are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds but typically cost 30 to 50 percent less. This can allow you to choose a larger or higher-quality stone within the same budget. We carry both natural and lab-grown diamonds across our collections, so you can compare them side by side in our showrooms.
Ring Sizing Tips
Getting the right ring size is important, but do not let it become a source of anxiety. Here are some practical ways to figure it out.
- Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and bring it to a jeweller for measurement. Make sure it is a ring they wear on their ring finger, not their index or middle finger.
- Ask a friend or family member to casually find out. Sometimes a close friend can take your partner ring shopping under a different pretence.
- Use a ring sizer at home. You can request a free plastic ring sizer from many jewellers, including us. Try it while your partner is asleep if you are going for a surprise, though this does require some stealth.
- When in doubt, go slightly larger. It is easier to size a ring down than up, and most jewellers can adjust by one or two sizes without any difficulty.
Keep in mind that fingers can change size throughout the day and with the seasons. They tend to be slightly larger in the evening and in warmer weather. If you are measuring, aim for a time when your partner's hands are at a normal temperature, not straight after a run or on a very cold morning.
Why Buy From a New Zealand Jeweller
With so many online options available, you might wonder whether it matters where you buy your engagement ring. There are genuine advantages to purchasing from a New Zealand-based jeweller that are worth considering.
- New Zealand consumer protection. When you buy from a local jeweller, your purchase is covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. This gives you legal rights around quality, fitness for purpose, and after-sales service that overseas sellers may not honour.
- Local resizing and servicing. Rings occasionally need to be resized, cleaned, or have prongs checked. Working with a local jeweller means you can walk in and have these things taken care of quickly, rather than shipping your ring overseas and waiting weeks.
- Supporting local craftsmanship. Many New Zealand jewellers, including our parent company Polished Diamonds, have skilled workshop teams who craft and customise rings right here in New Zealand. Polished Diamonds has been in the industry since 1969, and that depth of experience shows in the quality of the finished product.
- See before you buy. Diamonds and engagement rings look different in person compared to photos on a screen. Visiting a showroom lets you see how different shapes, sizes, and settings look on the hand, compare stones under proper lighting, and get expert guidance face to face.
There is also something special about building a relationship with the jeweller who creates your ring. Many of our customers return for wedding rings, dress rings, anniversary gifts, and even signet rings over the years. It is a partnership, not just a transaction.
